Bursaries

Bursary Application Submission is closed.

For the 37th ECP in Vienna, the ESP provides two different types of bursaries

  • Abstract-based bursaries to support the attendance of residents and trainees in pathology at the congress in Vienna
  • Bursaries for pathologists from under-resourced countries
What is included in a bursary?
  • Bursaries include a free registration to the congress as well as a monetary grant
Important information for bursary applicants
  • Please note that abstracts can only be presented (and thus published) on-site, not virtually! Please ensure that you are able to travel to Vienna when submitting an abstract.
  • Please note that only complete applications will be considered for a bursary. Bursary applications submitted well before the deadline (2 April 2025) will be checked and followed up on if documentation is not complete. Bursary applications submitted right by the deadline cannot be followed up on – only the documentation submitted by the deadline will be considered.
  • Please do not submit your abstract twice (as a “normal” abstract submission AND a bursary application).
  • Applications will be evaluated by a ‘bursaries’ committee’ to ensure fairness. The results will be sent to all applicants by e-mail.
  • Kindly note, that applicants may be granted a maximum of five bursaries over the years. In case you have already received five bursaries in previous ECPs, please refrain from applying again since you are not eligible to benefit from further bursaries.
You can only apply for ONE OR THE OTHER bursary category. Please refrain from submitting your application in both categories.
Should you fulfill the requirements for both bursary types, we highly recommend submitting an abstract-based bursary application.

Abstract-based bursaries | Requirements (mandatory)

Your application can only be considered if all of the following requirements are met:

  • Active ESP membership at the time of application
  • Submission of an abstract
  • Submission of a brief Curriculum Vitae
  • Supporting letter (official letter by your head of department/institute incl. signature to let the committee know, why you should be granted a bursary)
  • Proof of trainee/resident status (on official letter head paper, including start and end date of your residency / training programme; must be issued in the year of the respective congress, signed by your head of department/institute)
  • Copy of passport/ID (applicants must be under 45; i.e. born after 6 September 1980)

Bursaries for pathologists from under-resourced countries | Requirements (mandatory)

Your application can only be considered if all of the following requirements are met:

  • You have been an active member of ESP for (at least) three consecutive years (2023, 2024, 2025).*
  • You reside in one of the countries included on the respective list.

*Becoming a member retrospectively does not qualify for a bursary.

Please note that the fulfillment of all listed prerequisites does not automatically guarantee a bursary.

Registration for abstract submitters/bursary applicants

  • For the 37th ECP it is not necessary to register before submitting your abstract.
  • However, registration and payment will be mandatory for authors of accepted abstracts by 26 June 2025 to get their abstract(s) published in Virchows Archiv.
  • Please note: ESP members with active membership can login with their ESP membership account credentials to register for the congress. Non-members will need to create a (registration) account (not identical with the abstract submission account).
  • When submitting an abstract or a bursary application, please make sure to use the same e-mail address as for your ECP registration.
  • Failing to use matching e-mail addresses might result in your abstract not being published.

Abstract authors may register at the early registration fee by 2 April 2025. If no registration has been submitted by that date, the early registration fee will be made available again (this also applies to bursary applicants who are not awarded a bursary) once abstract notifications have been sent out, up until 26 June 2025.
